Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about our ballet, dance and drama programs

General Questions

What programs are offered at Ekin Akbaş Ballet and Dance?

We offer training in three main disciplines: Ballet (Children’s Ballet, Youth Ballet, Adult Ballet), Dance (Modern Dance, Contemporary Dance), and Drama (Children’s Drama, Youth Drama, Adult Drama & Theatre). Every program is designed for its specific age group and level. All our programs fall within the scope of Ministry of Education certified certification.

Where are the classes held?

Our studio is located on Bağdat Avenue in Kadıköy, at the Ersoy Business Centre: Feneryolu Mh., Bağdat Cad. No:53-59, Block A, No:11 — 34724 Kadıköy / Istanbul. Covered parking and elevator access are available.

Can I attend a trial class? Is it free?

Yes — we offer a free trial class for all our programs. Simply fill in our contact form or give us a call to arrange it. This gives you the chance to experience the program first-hand and see whether it suits you.

When can I start?

Our classes run year-round without interruption — there is no set term start date to wait for. Because we consistently open new groups at different levels, you can join a class suitable for your level at any time.

How large are the class groups?

We keep our classes intentionally small. This ensures every student receives individual attention and can progress at their own pace. Our instructors closely follow the development of each participant.

What does the Ministry of Education certified program mean?

Our programs operate as a certified course institution under the regulations of the Turkish Ministry of National Education (MEB). Students who successfully complete a program receive an officially recognised course completion certificate. This certificate formally documents that the holder has received professional education in the performing arts.

What happens if I miss a class? Is there a make-up option?

Occasional absences are no problem — our instructors arrange make-up classes. Extended absences may mean some catching up is needed, but you can always continue in a group matched to your current level.

Ballet Programs

Is there an age limit for adult ballet?

Anyone over 18 who has no condition preventing movement is welcome in our Adult Ballet program. There is no upper age limit — we have many successful students well into their 50s and beyond.

Can I start ballet with no previous dance experience?

Absolutely. No prior ballet or dance experience is required. All our programs are designed from complete beginner level — you start with fundamental movements and progress at your own pace.

Do I need to be slim or flexible to do ballet?

No. There is no specific weight or flexibility requirement. You are welcome at any age and in any body. Flexibility and strength develop with regular attendance — you are not expected to arrive with them already in place.

Can I do ballet if I have a back injury, knee problems, or similar health issues?

We recommend consulting your doctor first. If your doctor gives the go-ahead, you are welcome to join. We have students with herniated discs who continue to participate happily. Where a condition requires extra care, our instructors make the necessary adaptations.

From what age does the Children’s Ballet program start?

Our Children’s Ballet program begins at age 4. Through a play-based approach, children develop rhythm, coordination, and body awareness. No prior ballet experience is needed.

What should I wear to class?

Comfortable, flexible clothing that allows free movement is ideal. For ballet, leggings or a leotard are preferred. If you don’t have ballet shoes yet, you can start in socks. Bring a towel and a water bottle.

Dance Programs

What is the difference between Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance?

Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance are closely related disciplines but differ in approach and movement philosophy.

Modern Dance is a dance technique that developed as an alternative to the rigid conventions of classical ballet. At its core are emotion, freedom of expression, body awareness, and a natural approach to movement. Technical structure, balance, coordination, rhythm, and body control are all important elements of modern dance training.

Contemporary Dance grew out of the evolution of modern dance and represents a freer, more investigative approach that brings together different dance disciplines. Modern dance, ballet, improvisation, floor work, and movement research can all coexist within contemporary dance. The expression, creativity, and personal interpretation of movement matter just as much as technical form.

Both programs are suitable for participants with no dance background and are structured according to different levels.

From what age can I join dance classes?

Our Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance programs are aimed at children who have completed primary school, young people, and adults. For children, our ballet program starts from age 4. If you are unsure which program is the right fit for you or your child, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise.

Drama Programs

Can I join drama classes with no stage or acting experience?

Yes — no stage or acting experience is needed. Our drama programs start from complete beginner level. Through creative drama, improvisation, and group work, participants build confidence, communication skills, and empathy.

At what age does Children’s Drama end and when does Youth Drama begin?

Children’s Drama is for ages 7–12, and Youth Drama is for ages 13–17. At 13, students naturally transition to the Youth Drama group. Both programs prioritise individual development and creativity.

Can Adult Drama lead to a career in theatre?

Our Adult Drama & Theatre program offers a comprehensive foundation for both those joining as a hobby and those who wish to pursue the performing arts more seriously. Acting techniques, text analysis, and stage practice are all included — providing a solid base for anyone wanting to step into the professional theatre world.

Studio & Certification

Is there an end-of-year show?

Classes continue year-round at an ever-advancing level — there is no fixed “end of year”. Performances, shows at various venues, and artistic events are organised throughout the year. Students who joined with no experience do reach the point of performing on stage over time.

Can I rent the studio for private events, rehearsals, or filming?

Yes. Our studio — equipped with a professional ballet barre system, full-length mirrors, appropriate flooring, and natural light — is available for hourly rental. It is suitable for choreography work, video/photo shoots, and individual training. Contact us for availability and pricing.
